Where: national park El Torcal
Difficulty: moderate walk, but you need proper shoes and to watch your steps
Length: 1km green line, 3 km yellow line, 3 hours line with the guide
Attractions: beautiful rock formations and ammonite fossils
You need to decide, whether it is more important for you to see El Torcal with blue skies or without people.
Either way, don't underestimate the clothing - the weather is much colder at over 1000m above sea level, expect fog in the morning.
If you get up early: chances are you'll park at the top of the visitor centre. If you're caught colder than you expected, the shop is ready. You can buy everything from socks to a jacket :-). You can grab a coffee or a bite to eat at the half-empty restaurant before you hit the trail. It will probably be foggy, but it's an experience nonetheless - incredible rock formations gradually pop out at you from the misty surroundings. It's quiet everywhere, and there's a good chance that by the end of the loop, it'll clear up and the sun will treat you to some advert-quality photos.
If you arrive later: the upper car park is likely to be full. You have the option to either pay for the shuttle bus for 2 euros (round trip) or take a hike on foot with breathtaking views (don't take the road, even though it's a bit shorter). You'll probably queue for coffee or a seat in the restaurant at the top, but you can enjoy the amazing rock formations while you eat. You'll meet people along the way, a lot more on the green loop than on the yellow. If the visitor center told you the yellow trail is for two hours, don't believe them too much. If you're in normal shape, you can cover the three kilometers in an hour, and the rest of the time will be spent taking pictures of rocks with blue skies.
With children: small children can easily manage the green circuit, take the bigger ones on the yellow route. You can have fun guessing what each rock formation represents.
